With the advancement in technology, time has become the most expensive commodity. To save time, people are shifting from long hours train journeys to quicker air travel. But this shift happened only with the upper urban class, who had access to airports and could afford the expensive tickets of air travel. This gap in market generated the concept of low cost carriers or LCC. This allowed the masses who could not afford the air fare or did not have access to the infrastructure to take advantage of air travel.
Low cost carriers are possible due to improvement in infrastructure, urbanisation of towns and increase in competition, which has allowed companies to increase their number of flights and lower the rates of their tickets. This has allowed people to access not just tier I cities but also direct connectivity to tier II and tier III cities.
Increase in completion has ensured air fare remains cheap airlinetickets. But this has also benefitted the airline companies as they are able to cater to more and more customers and avail economies of large scale. This allows them to cover their cost even after reduction of fares.
By availing the use of air travel, people are able to cover a 20-30 hour journey within a span of 2-3 hours. Though the airlines are ‘no frills’ carriers, meaning they are not providing services in the flight like entertainment or food and beverages, the costumers do not mind the lack of services as they are saving time and money on their travel.
The businessmen are able to save their valuable time and reach for meetings and conferences quicker and also return back to their business within 24 hours. The families on holiday or trip can save time on travel, reach their destinations on time and have more days to enjoy their holiday. So, the cheap airfare has allowed the Indian mass along with the companies to avail a lot of benefits.
