Shag hairstyle or shaggy hairstyle gives a person a desired and deliberate messy or shaggy look. These hairstyles are popular because they are easy to maintain, and doesn’t take lot of time when styling the hair. Also it can be customized as per ones hair texture and face. It gives an ‘out of the bed’ look which is easy to manage and do not require any extra caring and handling.

This hairstyle emerged into fashion in the 1970s with the movie Klute and a television show Charlie’s angels. The hairstyle got recognition as the “cool” hairstyle as it was associated with people having carefree attitude and also it require minimum maintenance. Later in 1980s the rock artists adopted this hairstyle and made it even more popular amongst the youth. The heavy rock and metal artists would wear their hair in long layers with a most of the hair on the head layering down to the nape, with flicks around the face. It became a style which both men and women could carry off with flair and matched their attitude.

Some people say that this style was popularized by African-Americans in the 1960s and gradually became a style that represented the youth because it showed the person with such a hairstyle has a ‘devil may care’ attitude. It became trendy after actresses like Florence Henderson, Farrah Fawcett and actors like David Bowie and Rod Stewart adopted this hairstyle.

In the 2000s this hairstyle was flaunted by various actor, actresses and sportsperson in the well renowned magazine called Vogue. The basic difference in shag hairstyle of 1980s and shag hairstyle of 2000s is that now people sport this look with highlights and bangs around the face. It can be worn in three styles: short, medium and long shag, depending on the length, texture and type of hair one has. Also varies with the face-cut.
